Probiotics

The probiotics are live microorganisms that, when taken in adequate amounts, contribute to the balance of the intestinal flora.

What are probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms (such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains), while prebiotics are plant fibers (such as inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides) that feed the beneficial intestinal flora. Probiotics, as a category, do not currently have an approved general health claim by the EFSA under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. They are presented here as components of a composition, without a claim to treat diarrhea, constipation, urinary tract infections, improve psychology, oral health, or control weight. Any claim depends on the specific strain and dosage of the product.

Sources of probiotics and prebiotics in the diet

Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and other fermented foods contain natural probiotics. Fruits, vegetables and legumes contain prebiotic fibers.
