Solgar Magnesium Citrate 200mg: citric magnesium in tablets

Solgar Magnesium Citrate is a dietary supplement in tablets, with magnesium in the form of citric magnesium. The recommended dose of two tablets provides 400mg of magnesium, which is 107% of the Reference Dietary Intake, so each tablet corresponds to 200mg. The package contains 60 tablets.

It is aimed at adults who want to safely cover their daily magnesium intake, people with intense physical activity, those who follow a diet poor in leafy vegetables, dried fruits and legumes, and those who go through periods of intense fatigue.

What magnesium does inside the cell

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant metal in the human body and the second most abundant intracellular cation. About 60% is found in bones and the rest mainly in muscles and soft tissues. It acts as a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, most notably its binding with ATP: the energy molecule is biologically active mainly as a magnesium-ATP complex. Hence magnesium's contribution to normal energy metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.*

In muscles and nerves, magnesium plays a role in regulating the movement of ions in and out of the cell, competitively to calcium. This is why it is associated with the normal functioning of muscles, the normal functioning of the nervous system and the balance of electrolytes.* It also participates in the normal synthesis of proteins and in the process of cell division.*

How Solgar positions the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar itself, citric magnesium is positioned for the following:

  • Form with higher bioavailability compared to other forms of magnesium. The company emphasizes that citrate is easily absorbed as an organic salt of citric acid.
  • Energy metabolism and fatigue reduction. Approved claims of magnesium, which Solgar promotes first.
  • Normal muscle function. Magnesium participates in the contraction and relaxation cycle of the muscle fiber.
  • Nervous system function and psychological function. Two separate approved claims that the company presents together.
  • Maintenance of bone health. The body's largest magnesium reserve is in the skeleton.
  • Electrolyte balance and protein synthesis. Functions that concern both hydration and tissue repair.
  • Suitable for active people seeking energy support. This is how Solgar describes the audience it targets.

The above statements are attributed to the producer.

Why this formula, citrate versus other forms

Magnesium never circulates alone in a supplement, it is always bound to another molecule. In inorganic forms, such as oxide, the percentage of elemental magnesium per gram is high but solubility is low. In citrate, magnesium is bound to citric acid, the same organic acid we find in citrus fruits and in the Krebs cycle, and the salt is clearly more soluble.

Practically this means two things. First, it requires a larger volume of tablets for the same amount of elemental magnesium, which is why the dose here is two tablets. Second, citrate has a mild osmotic effect in the intestine, which some people perceive as looser bowel movements when taking large doses. The main ingredient, magnesium, carries a number of approved claims: normal energy metabolism, normal muscle and nervous system function, normal psychological function, electrolyte balance, normal protein synthesis, maintenance of normal bones and teeth, reduction of tiredness and fatigue.*

Who is it suitable for

It suits adults who exercise systematically and lose electrolytes through sweat. It suits people with a demanding schedule and a feeling of fatigue, where the approved claim for fatigue reduction makes sense. It suits those who eat few leafy vegetables, legumes and dried fruits, the main dietary sources of the metal. It also suits older adults, whose intake from food is often lower.

The product is a dietary supplement and does not replace medical diagnosis or medication. It is not intended for the prevention, treatment or cure of migraines, muscle cramps or any other condition. If symptoms are frequent or severe, consult a doctor.

Ingredients

Main ingredients per 2 tablets: Magnesium (in citrate form) 400mg (107% RDI).

Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, dibasic phosphate, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, vegetable glycerine, cellulose gum.

Free of: Sugar, starch, gluten, wheat, dairy, soy, yeast, preservatives, sweeteners or artificial flavors.

Dosage and usage instructions

Form: Tablets.
Recommended dosage: For adults, two tablets daily with meals.

With two tablets a day, the 60-tablet package is sufficient for one month of use. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet.

Keep a two-hour gap between taking magnesium and tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, as the metal reduces their absorption. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a health condition, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Store the product in a cool, dry place, away from children.

Frequently asked questions

How much magnesium do I take with the recommended dose?

Two tablets provide 400mg of magnesium, which corresponds to 107% of the Reference Dietary Intake.

Why two tablets instead of one?

Citric magnesium has a higher molecular weight per unit of elemental magnesium than inorganic forms, so the same amount of metal requires a larger volume. The 200mg dose per tablet allows for adjustment on the advice of a pharmacist.

How long does the package last?

At the recommended dose of two tablets a day, the 60 tablets cover 30 days.

What is the difference from chelated magnesium?

In citrate, magnesium is bound to citric acid, while in chelated forms it is bound to amino acids. Both are organic forms, differing in elemental magnesium content per tablet and individual tolerance.

Can it relax the intestines?

Citrate has a mild osmotic effect and in some people it may soften bowel movements, especially at higher doses. Tolerance is individual.

When during the day should I take it?

The company's guideline suggests taking it with meals. You can split the two tablets into two meals if it helps.

Is it suitable for vegans?

The formula contains no dairy, wheat, soy, gluten or yeast and the formulations are of plant origin.

Can I combine it with calcium or zinc?

The metals partially compete in absorption, so if you are already taking another metal supplement, seek the pharmacist's opinion on the timing of intake.

* Health claims approved under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. The product is not intended for the prevention, treatment or cure of human disease.
