Gel - Foam Cleanser

Cleansing gel and foam for oily skin: the step that regulates everything else

Cleansing alone does not reduce imperfections. It is the step that determines whether everything that follows will work or irritate. A proper cleanser removes sebum, sweat and makeup residues, and leaves the skin clean but not dry. The test is simple: if after washing your face it urgently needs cream, the product is too strong for you.

Many believe that the more a gel foams, the better it cleanses. Foam is not an indicator of effectiveness, it is a matter of surfactants. Modern mild formulas foam less and respect the barrier more. The same goes for temperature: very hot water removes lipids and leaves the skin irritated.

Textures and forms, which suits you?

Clear gel

The classic choice for skin that shines from the start. It washes off easily, gives a feeling of freshness and usually contains mild acids or balancing ingredients.

Creamy foam

A softer feel, suitable for combination skin, for skin undergoing treatment or for winter when the same skin dries out more easily.

Cleanser with mild exfoliation

Contains salicylic acid or AHA in low concentration and stays on the skin for a few seconds. Useful two to three times a week, not every night from day one.

Without soap and without fragrance

The choice for skin that shines and reddens at the same time. See also the general suggestions in face cleansing and makeup removal.

What we look for in the formulation

• Mild surfactants: coco-glucoside or betaine type, cleanse without a strong pulling sensation.
• Salicylic acid: works superficially in a cleanser, helps with the feeling of a clear pore.
• Zinc and niacinamide: for skin that shines strongly in the T-zone.
• Glycerin and panthenol: compensate for the drying that a strong gel may leave.
• pH close to the skin's natural pH: classic alkaline soaps leave the skin more vulnerable.
• Non-comedogenic label: useful especially in creamy textures.

Popular choices

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar gel is a timeless choice in the drawer, with the large package and the replacement having a separate audience. It is followed by the Avene Cleanance gel, with a mild feel and great acceptance among teenagers. The Apivita Cleansing Foam is the most popular creamy option for those who want eye makeup removal at the same time, while the Frezyderm Mild Wash is aimed at easily irritated skin. Good demand also has the Ducray Keracnyl foaming gel, the Bioderma Sebium and the Vichy Normaderm triple action with exfoliation and mask.

How to apply correctly

Wet the face with lukewarm water, warm a small amount in your hands and work in circular motions for twenty to thirty seconds. Insist a little more on the nose and the chin. Rinse thoroughly, because cleanser residues irritate, and pat dry with a clean towel. Once in the morning, once in the evening. If you have put on sunscreen or makeup, precede with micellar water or cleansing oil and then the gel.

Frequently asked questions

My gel stings. Do I change it?

Yes. Stinging is not an indication that it works. Choose a fragrance-free and alcohol-free formula and reduce the contact time.

Can I wash three and four times a day?

It does not help. Over-cleansing dries out, irritates and often increases the feeling of oiliness during the day. For the midday shine, prefer matte paper towels.

Do I need a brush or sponge?

Not necessarily. Hands are enough and are milder. If you use any accessory, clean it often and do not press on inflamed lesions.

Is it also for the back or body?

Some formulas explicitly mention use on face and body. Read the label and see the special suggestions for back and shoulders.

Is the cleanser enough?

It is the base, not the solution. It needs hydration on top and, if necessary, an active ingredient. See the whole picture in oily skin and acne.
