Serum

Serum for Oiliness and Blemishes: Small Bottle, High Concentration

Serum is the most concentrated step in the routine. It has a light texture, low fat content and high concentration of active ingredients, so it absorbs quickly and does not weigh down the skin. For shiny skin, this is ideal: you get the action without the filmy feeling that a rich cream leaves behind.

Many think that serum replaces moisturizer. It does not replace it. Serum brings the active ingredients, the cream on top keeps them in place and limits moisture loss. Without this second step, a strong serum with acids often leaves the skin pulled.

Which serum for which skin type

Shiny and Enlarged Pores

Niacinamide with zinc, in concentrations around 10 percent. It is the mildest starting point and combines with almost everything. See also the category niacinamide.

Blackheads and Pimples

Salicylic acid in liquid form or in combination with LHA. It works inside the pore and helps reduce the appearance of blemishes.

Post-blemish Marks

Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C in stabilized form. Patience here is part of the recipe, because the tone changes slowly.

Rough Texture and Dull Appearance

AHA, PHA or mild exfoliants for the evening routine, two to three times a week.

How to Read the Ingredients List

• Position in the ingredient list: the higher the active ingredient, the greater the concentration.
• Concentration: more does not always mean better. High concentrations increase the risk of irritation.
• Packaging: dark glass or an airtight pump for ingredients that oxidize, like vitamin C.
• Hyaluronic acid: often accompanies acids to balance the feeling of dryness.
• Without alcohol and fragrance: important when the skin already receives active ingredients.
• Non-comedogenic indication: reasonable request for a product that stays under cream and sunscreen.

Popular Choices

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar Serum is the most sought-after serum in the category, with a combination of acids in a dense formula. The The Ordinary covers the most economical needs, both with niacinamide and zinc and with salicylic acid solution. The Caudalie Vinopure and the URIAGE Hyseac have steady demand for their light feel, while the Ducray Keracnyl and the Frezyderm Ac-Norm cater to those who want something more hydrating. For more specialized needs there are the SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age, the Avene Cleanance A.H.A, the Nuxe Zinc Power and the Neutrogena Clear & Defend. More general suggestions can be found in the beauty serums.

Application Series and Combinations

Clean skin, lotion if you use it, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen in the morning. Three to four drops are enough for the whole face. Niacinamide is suitable both morning and evening. Acids and retinoids are kept for the night and do not go in the same application together. If you start something new, give it two weeks alone before adding another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine niacinamide and salicylic acid?

Yes, it is one of the most tolerable combinations. If your skin is sensitive, put the salicylic acid in the evening and the niacinamide in the morning.

My serum tingles the first seconds. Normal?

A short sting with acids is often reported. If it lasts minutes, if it follows redness or peeling, dilute use or change formula.

Do I need a serum if I already have an intensive cream?

Often not. Two thick products together increase irritation without proportional benefit. Choose one and stick to it.

How long does a bottle last?

With daily use, a 30ml bottle lasts about two months. If it runs out in three weeks, you probably use a larger amount than needed.
