Lotions

Lotion and toners for acne-prone skin

The lotion is the step between cleansing and care. It is applied with a cotton pad or hands, removes what was missed during washing, restores the pH of the surface and prepares the skin to accept the serum or cream. On oily skin, a well-chosen lotion leaves a fresh feeling without drying out.

The old image of astringent lotion with strong alcohol has long changed. Alcohol gives an instant feeling of clean and matte, but when used daily it dehydrates and makes the skin more sensitive. Modern formulas are based on mild acids, balancing ingredients and soothing agents.

Which product for which need

Toner

Cleanses without rinsing and is practical for quick mornings, travel and easily irritated skin. Useful also as the first step before the gel, when there is makeup.

Toning lotion with acids

Contains salicylic, glycolic or LHA. Works on texture uniformity and the feeling of a tightened pore. Start twice a week and increase frequency only if the skin accepts it.

Soothing lotion without alcohol

For oily skin that easily reddens, or that is undergoing treatment. Often contains thermal water and panthenol.

Spray with pump

Convenient for refreshing during the day and for areas that are not easily reached by a cotton pad. See also the facial toning lotion general suggestions.

Ingredients worth looking for

• Salicylic acid: liposoluble, reaches the pore and helps reduce the appearance of blackheads.
• Glycolic and lactic acid: surface exfoliation, clarity and shine.
• Niacinamide: improves the appearance of glow and tone.
• Extract of birch, tea, amamelides: give a tightening feeling without alcohol.
• Thermal water: soothes after acids or after sun exposure.
• Without fragrance: a lotion stays on the skin, so fragrance is more important here than in a washed-off product.

Popular choices

Among toners, the most popular are Bioderma Sebium H2O, Avene Cleanance and La Roche-Posay Effaclar, three reliable options with different skin sensations. For lotions with acids, the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Lotion Astringente and Caudalie Vinopure are in steady demand, while the SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age is for those who want something more concentrated. More soothing are the Frezyderm Ac-Norm, Helenvita ACNormal and Evdermia Caladerm, while the Apivita Just Bee Clear and Froika AC cover the intermediate needs.

How to fit it into your routine

After cleansing and before the serum. Dampen a cotton pad, pass it without pressure and avoid rubbing, especially on irritated areas. If the lotion contains acids, keep it for the evening and do not combine it with another exfoliant at the same time. The next morning, sunscreen becomes even more essential.

Frequently asked questions

Is lotion really needed or is it an unnecessary step?

It is not a mandatory step. It becomes useful when you have a specific goal, for example, mild exfoliation, a feeling of a clean pore, or a quick refresh during the day.

Does toner need rinsing off?

Many state that it does not. In practice, a quick rinse with water reduces the chance of leftover surfactants on blemish-prone skin.

Lotion with alcohol, yes or no?

Occasionally it is fine. As a daily habit for dehydrated skin, it usually intensifies dryness and irritation.

Can I use it while undergoing acne treatment?

Often yes, but with mild, acid-free formulas, because the skin under treatment is more sensitive. Consult your dermatologist or pharmacist first.
