Intensive Care

Intensive care for imperfections: when the basic routine is not enough

Intensive care means a product with a higher concentration of active ingredients, designed to stay on the skin and work on the whole face or an entire zone. It is not a targeted application on a pimple, nor is it simple hydration. It is the step that tackles the persistent: the clogged pores, the uneven texture, the red or dark marks that remain after an imperfection has subsided.

One clarification that deserves to be said clearly. These products help reduce the appearance of imperfections and improve the look of the skin. They are not medication. When the blemishes are numerous, deep, or leave scars, the right move is dermatological evaluation, with cosmetics playing a complementary role.

Forms and levels of intensity

Cream or daily use gel

The most common form. It combines mild keratolytics with hydration, to be used morning and night.

Concentrated essence

Small package, high concentration, often with a combination of acids. Start every other night and gradually increase.

Formula with color

Provides immediate uniformity while working, useful for those who don't want to add separate makeup.

Weekly intensive application

Peeling and intensive application protocols, twice a week. Suitable for skin that cannot tolerate daily acids. Combines well with masks and scrubs.

The active ingredients you will encounter

• Salicylic acid and LHA: work inside and around the pore, helping to reduce the appearance of comedones.
• Niacinamide with zinc: for a balanced feel and tone uniformity.
• Azelaic acid: one of the most useful when the problem is not the pimple but the mark it left.
• Cosmetic retinoids: retinaldehyde and retinol derivatives, with gradual introduction. See also the category retinol.
• Glycolic acid: smooths and brightens, but increases sun sensitivity.
• Soothing agents: panthenol, thermal spring water, extracts, to keep the skin comfortable.

Popular choices

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+ M is the best-selling product in the entire range of oily skin, with the Effaclar Serum following for those who want a more concentrated formula. The Avene Cleanance Comedomed has a steady audience for daily care of imperfections, while the BIRETIX and the Synchroline Aknicare are the most specialized suggestions on the shelf. The Intermed Acnofix and the Rilastil Acnestil cover teenage skin well, the Bioderma Sebium Kerato+ gives a more modern look with color, and the Lierac with salicylic acid is for those who prefer short-term protocols.

How to fit in without irritation

One active ingredient at a time. Start two or three times a week, in the evening, on dry skin, in a pea-sized amount for the whole face. If dryness appears, reduce the frequency instead of stopping completely. The hydrating layer from above or below makes a big difference in tolerance. The sunscreen the next morning is not optional. And measure the result in eight to twelve weeks, not ten days.

Frequently asked questions

More pimples appeared in the first weeks. Is this normal?

With exfoliants and retinoids, an initial adaptation period is often mentioned. If, however, the picture worsens or there is intense irritation, stop and ask a pharmacist or dermatologist.

Can I combine two intensive products?

Better not at the same time. Alternate them on different evenings. Combining multiple acids in the same application is the most common cause of irritation.

What do I do with the marks that are left?

The reddish marks usually fade over time. For the dark ones, niacinamide, azelaic acid, and systematic sun protection help. Related suggestions are also available in the hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

I am on isotretinoin treatment. What care suits?

The skin becomes very dry and sensitive, so priority is given to the mild cleansing formula, rich hydration, lip balm, and sunscreen. Acids and exfoliants are sidelined. Anything related to the treatment itself is exclusively determined by your dermatologist.
