Topical Treatment

Topical treatment: spot care for a single blackhead

Topical application has a very specific role. It targets the individual blemish that appeared last night, not the whole face. That's why the packaging is small, the textures are denser and the concentrations are higher than in a day cream. The goal is to limit the appearance of the blemish to a few days and to prevent the irritation, which is the main reason for the marks that remain afterwards.

The usual exaggeration is to spread the spot product over the entire T-zone because a pimple appeared on the chin. The result is dryness, peeling and a skin that can't tolerate anything else afterwards. For overall coverage, there is the intensive care, which is designed precisely for this.

Forms you will find on the shelf

Roll-on and stick

Clean application without fingers, convenient for the bag and for refreshing during the day.

Gel in a tube

The most classic form. Allows you to control the amount and usually dries quickly so that makeup can be applied on top.

Patches and pads

Transparent stickers that cover the blemish, absorb moisture and, above all, prevent the hand from irritating it. Ideal for sleep.

Spray with pump

Useful when blackheads appear in places that are not easily reached by hand. See also the suggestions for back and shoulders.

What they contain and what each one does

• Salicylic acid: helps to detach the material that clogs the pore, suitable mainly for closed comedones.
• Zinc and sulfur: give a drying sensation to the blemish.
• Niacinamide: helps the image of the red spot around the blemish.
• Tea tree and herbal extracts: the mildest version, for easily irritated skin.
• Hydrocolloid: the material of the pads, which absorbs moisture and mechanically protects.
• Soothing and moisturizing: in modern formulas, they coexist so that the spot does not peel.

Popular choices

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar Serum is often chosen for persistent blackheads, while the Avene Cleanance Comedomed has steady demand for its mild feel. The Intermed Acnofix in a small size is the typical suggestion for a single blemish, as is the Synchroline Aknicare. The BIRETIX with its mask and concentrates targets more persistent cases, the Frezyderm Ac-Norm covers teenage skin, while the The Ordinary with its salicylic acid and the Apivita Just Bee Clear are the most economical and the most herbal options respectively.

Correct usage in four steps

Clean and dry the area. Apply a minimal amount only on the blemish, not around it. Let it dry before moisturizing or applying makeup. Repeat once or twice a day and stop once the blemish has subsided. If using a patch, place it on completely dry skin and leave it on for six to eight hours.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I see a difference?

Usually in two to four days for a superficial blemish. A deep, painful pimple is not a matter for a spot product and needs a dermatologist's assessment.

Can I squeeze the pimple and then apply?

No. Squeezing extends the blemish downwards and increases the likelihood of a scar or mark.

Is it suitable for teenagers or pregnancy?

There are formulas that declare suitability for younger ages. In pregnancy and breastfeeding, many ingredients have restrictions, so always ask your pharmacist before use.

The spot peels and reddens. What do I do?

Thin out the applications, apply a soothing moisturizer around the area and give the skin two to three days of rest. Excessive drying makes the picture worse, not better.
