Night Creams

Night creams for firmness: why evening matters differently

During sleep the skin does not take a break. Its temperature rises slightly, breathing increases and cell renewal follows its own cycle. Practically this means two things: you lose more moisture during the night, and at the same time the skin actively absorbs ingredients without being challenged by sun, pollution and makeup. This is why evening formulas are richer in texture and bolder in ingredients.

A misconception worth dispelling: night cream is not just a more oily version of day cream. It does not contain sunscreen filter because it doesn't need it, and often contains retinoids or acids that would be photosensitive during the day. This is why we don't apply it in the morning.

What else to ask for from an evening formula

The textures here range from velvety creams to balms and overnight masks. If you wake up with a greasy feeling, the texture is richer than your skin can handle, not a wrong category choice. If instead the skin pulls at waking, it's worth looking at the suggestions for very dry skin. For daytime, the equivalent step is found in creams for all skin types.

Ingredients that work at night

• Retinol and derivatives: the most studied evening active for fine lines and texture, with gradual introduction twice a week.
• Peptides: the gentle alternative when retinol causes intolerance.
• Mild exfoliating acids: smooth out the microrelief, but never the same evening as retinol.
• Ceramides and butters: limit moisture loss in the eight hours of sleep.
• Melatonin and antioxidants: increasingly appearing in evening formulations.
• Hyaluronic acid: for skin that looks full in the morning instead of saggy from the pillow.

Popular choices

The Vichy Neovadiol has evening versions for perimenopause and postmenopause and is the most sought after in the category, while the Vichy Liftactiv Collagen Specialist covers the need for density. The Lierac Lift Integral offers a restructuring night cream and alternative, the Caudalie Resveratrol-Lift is the most popular botanical option and the Apivita Beevine Elixir the Greek alternative. How to include it in the evening routine

First remove makeup and then cleanse, because one step does not replace the other. Next comes the serum, the eye cream and finally the night cream, in a slightly larger quantity than in the morning. Apply it at least twenty minutes before lying down, so that it is absorbed and does not transfer to the pillow. If you start retinol, the sandwich technique, that is hydrating before and after, reduces irritation in the first weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a separate night cream?

It's not mandatory. However, if you want to use retinoids or acids, you need an evening product, because these ingredients do not match sun exposure.

Can I put it on in the morning if I have very dry skin?

Better not, especially if it contains retinol or acids. Prefer a rich day cream and sunscreen on top.

How often do I apply retinol at the beginning?

Two nights a week for fifteen days, then three, and increase only if the skin accepts it without redness or peeling.

I wake up with signs from the pillow. Does the cream help?

A well-hydrated skin restores these signs faster. It also helps to sleep on your back and prefer a non-silk pillowcase.
