Solgar No 7: seven ingredients for joints

The Solgar No 7 is a dietary supplement in phytocapsules, with seven different ingredients per capsule: 100mg vitamin C as Ester-C (L-ascorbic acid), 100mg extract of Boswellia serrata resin, 50mg turmeric root extract (Curcuma longa), 40mg UC-II cartilage titrated to provide 10mg total collagen, 35mg extract of white willow bark (Salix spp.), 35mg extract of ginger root (Zingiber officinale) and 27mg pepper complex with cayenne and Bioperine. The package contains 30 phytocapsules.

It is aimed at adults with physically demanding daily routines, people who exercise regularly and those who strain their joints due to their profession, and who want a complex formula with just one capsule a day.

Why vitamin C is key in a joint formula

Cartilage, the connective tissue that covers the articular surfaces, is largely composed of collagen. Collagen is not synthesized on its own: its formation requires enzymes that use vitamin C as a necessary cofactor. Without sufficient vitamin C, the hydroxylation of the amino acids proline and lysine, i.e. the step that gives the collagen molecule its stable triple helix, is not completed correctly.

Therefore, the approved claim is clear: vitamin C contributes to the normal formation of collagen for the normal function of cartilage and bones*. Here, vitamin C is present as Ester-C, i.e. L-ascorbic acid, a form that is not acidic like ascorbic acid and is often chosen by people with sensitive stomachs. The 100mg per capsule cover 125% of the reference intake.

How Solgar positions the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar itself, the company describes the following:

  • Specialized formula with 7 bioactive ingredients that support joint function and comfort. This is the overall positioning of the product by the manufacturer.
  • Enhancement of mobility and flexibility. The wording is attributed to Solgar and does not correspond to an approved health claim for any of the ingredients.
  • Improvement of the range of motion. This is the manufacturer's wording for the whole formula.
  • Next-generation innovative combination. Refers to the way the company differentiates the composition from older joint formulas.
  • Suitable for active people and athletes. Refers to the target audience of the product, not to any action.

The above statements are attributed to the manufacturer. The UC-II collagen does not have an approved health claim from the EFSA, while the claims for the botanical ingredients of the formula, boswellia, turmeric, white willow, ginger and pepper, are under evaluation. The relevant references remain the subject of research.**

Ingredients one by one

  • Vitamin C as Ester-C 100mg: contributes to the normal formation of collagen for the normal function of cartilage, bones, skin and blood vessels, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, to the normal function of the immune system and to the reduction of fatigue and tiredness.*
  • Extract of Boswellia serrata 100mg: resin of a tree traditionally used in Ayurvedic practice. Here it is presented as a standardized extract 5-Loxin Advanced.**
  • Turmeric root extract 50mg: ratio 4:1, equivalent to 200mg of root. Curcumin is the main polyphenolic component of turmeric and is the subject of extensive research.**
  • UC-II titrated cartilage 40mg: provides 10mg of total collagen in an undenatured type II form. Collagen does not have an approved health claim.
  • White willow extract 35mg: ratio 5:1, equivalent to 175mg of bark. Willow bark contains salicin, a compound related to salicylic acid.**
  • Ginger root extract 35mg: ratio 4:1, equivalent to 140mg of root, from Zingiber officinale.**
  • Pepper complex 27mg: cayenne powder (Capsicum annuum) and Bioperine from black pepper (Piper nigrum).**

Who is it suitable for

It suits adults who walk, run or lift weights daily and want coverage in vitamin C to support the normal formation of collagen, people who work standing or with manual tasks, as well as those who prefer one capsule a day instead of multiple formulations. It is suitable for vegetarians and is declared gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free and soy-free.

The product is a dietary supplement, does not replace a medical diagnosis and does not replace medication or the opinion of a treating physician for any joint condition.

FAQs

How many phytocapsules do I take per day?

One phytocapsule daily, preferably with a meal.

What is UC-II?

It is titrated cartilage that provides undenatured type II collagen. Here the 40mg provide 10mg of total collagen. It does not have an approved health claim from the EFSA.

What is the difference between Ester-C and common vitamin C?

It is the form L-ascorbic acid, which is not acidic like ascorbic acid. The approved claims for vitamin C apply to both forms.

Why does it contain pepper?

The pepper complex with Bioperine is included as a standardized component of the formula, along with cayenne powder.

Can I take it if I am allergic to aspirin?

No. The manufacturer recommends avoiding the product in case of aspirin allergy, due to the presence of salicin in the white willow bark.

Is it suitable for vegans?

The capsule is of plant origin, but the UC-II comes from animal cartilage, so the product is not vegan.

How long does the package last?

The 30 phytocapsules are sufficient for one month with the recommended dosage.

How does it differ from a simple collagen or glucosamine formulation?

Here the collagen is just one of the seven ingredients and is accompanied by vitamin C with an approved role in collagen formation, as well as five herbal extracts.
