Solgar Selenium 200μg: selenium yeast free

The Solgar Selenium (Yeast Free) 200μg is a dietary supplement in tablets, with 200μg of selenium per tablet in the form of L-selenomethionin, i.e. selenium bound to an amino acid. The amount corresponds to 364% of the Reference Dietary Intake. The package contains 250 tablets.

It is aimed at adults who want to cover their selenium intake and especially those who avoid yeast, as many selenium preparations are based on selenium-enriched yeast. Here the form is pure L-selenomethionin, without yeast carrier.

Why selenium depends on the soil

Selenium is a trace element that the body needs in microscopic amounts, in the range of micrograms. It does not synthesize it, it gets it exclusively from the diet, and there is a particularity: the selenium content of foods depends directly on the selenium content of the soil in which they were grown. The same cereals can have a very different selenium load depending on their geographical origin.

Within the body, selenium is incorporated into special proteins, the selenoproteins, among which are enzymes that participate in the antioxidant defense of the cell and in the metabolism of thyroid hormones. For this reason, selenium contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative stress and to the normal function of the thyroid.* It also contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to normal spermatogenesis and to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.*

How Solgar positions the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar:

  • Selenium, a critical metallic element found in the soil. The producer emphasizes the soil origin, which explains why dietary intake varies so much.
  • Contribution to the normal function of the immune system. Approved statement for selenium based on the European list.
  • Protection of cells against oxidative stress. Refers to the action of selenium-dependent enzymes against free radicals.
  • Contribution to the normal function of the thyroid. The thyroid is the organ with the highest selenium concentration per gram of tissue.
  • Contribution to the normal production of sperm. Approved claim relating to normal reproductive function.
  • Maintenance of normal hair and nails. Keratinized tissues have increased selenium requirements.
  • Yeast-free L-selenomethionin form for those sensitive to yeast. The producer positions the form as a solution for a specific need.

The above statements are attributed to the producer.

What L-selenomethionin offers

L-selenomethionin is the amino acid methionine with the sulfur atom replaced by selenium. It is the form in which selenium appears in plants and foods, so the body handles it with the same mechanisms it uses for dietary methionine. The product provides this form without a yeast carrier.

  • Selenium (as L-selenomethionin) 200μg per tablet, 364% RDI. Selenium contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative stress, to the normal function of the immune system, to the normal function of the thyroid, to normal spermatogenesis and to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.*

The formula contains no sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, soy, gluten, dairy, preservatives, sweeteners, artificial flavors or colors, and is declared by the producer as suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Who is it suitable for

It suits adults who live or eat products from areas with selenium-poor soil, which applies to much of Europe. It is of interest to those who have a sensitivity or intolerance to yeast and therefore exclude selenium-containing yeast preparations. It is an option for vegans and vegetarians, who lack animal sources of selenium, as well as for those who want a very large package at a lower cost per day.

It is a dietary supplement and does not replace a medical diagnosis or medication. Selenium has a narrow safety range, so dose adherence is important.

With one tablet per day, the 250-piece package is sufficient for 250 days, i.e. approximately eight months of use. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, as long-term excessive selenium intake is not safe. Dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet.

The product is not intended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are taking medication or have a health condition, especially if you have a diagnosed thyroid condition, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Avoid combining with other selenium-containing preparations to avoid exceeding the upper intake levels. Store the product in a cool, dry place and keep it out of reach of children.
