Face Cleansing and Make-up Removal: The Step That Decides Everything

During the day the face collects sebum, sweat, microparticles, sunscreen residues and make-up pigments. None of these go away with just water, because modern make-up and sunscreen formulas are designed to resist water and sweat. Cleansing dissolves and removes them, so that the skin starts from a clean base.

The most common misconception is that a good cleanser should leave the skin feeling tight. The feeling of tightness does not mean cleanliness, it means that the cleanser has removed part of the lipids that keep the barrier tight. A suitable cleanser leaves the face comfortable, without an oily film and without tingling. The second misconception concerns frequency: two cleansings a day is the maximum for most skin types, and for many dry or sensitive skin types one in the evening is enough.

Which Cleanser Format Suits Your Case

You Want Water Wash

If you like the feeling of a washcloth and your skin is combination, oily or can tolerate water well, go for gel cleansing for a more substantial wash of the oiliness, or the foam face cleansing if you prefer a lighter texture that spreads easily. In the same vein are the solid soaps, with the difference that they do not require packaging and travel without restriction of liquids.

You Don’t Want or Don’t Have Access to Water

Here come the emulsions for the face, which spread and wipe off, the Eau Micellaire with the micelles that pull the dirt on the cotton, and the cleansing face lotions. For emergency moments, after the gym or on a trip, there are also the face wipes.

You Want a One-Stop Product

The 3 in 1 products combine face cleansing, make-up removal and toning in one step. If you heavily colour your eyes, however, a special make-up removal for eyes does the job with less rubbing. And finally, the thermal waters soothe the skin when it is irritated.

What to Look for in the Composition

• Mild detergents of the syndet type instead of classic alkaline soap-saponified fats, when the skin dries out easily.
• pH close to 5 to 5.5, which is the natural pH of the skin surface.
• Glycerin, panthenol and ceramides, which limit the feeling of dryness after washing.
• Niacinamide and zinc in formulas for oily skin.
• Salicylic or glycolic acid in low concentration, for skin with uneven texture.
• Absence of fragrances and essential oils when the skin reacts easily.

Brands That Stand Out on Our Shelves

The Bioderma Sensibio has become a reference in micellar water, with large packs and pump for daily use. The La Roche-Posay Effaclar targets oily skin, while the range La Roche-Posay Toleriane is for the opposite case, for skins that react to everything. The Apivita Cleansing creamy foam and the Frezyderm Mild Wash are among the most stable options on the list. For cleansing without pulling there are the CeraVe Hydrating and CeraVe Foaming, while the Korres Greek Yoghurt covers the need for mild formulas.

How Cleansing Fits into Your Routine

The evening is a priority, because that’s when make-up, sunscreen and day pollutants leave. If you wear long-lasting sunscreen or make-up, double cleansing works well: first an oily or milky texture that dissolves the film, then a cleanser with water. In the morning, a quick pass is enough to remove night sweat. Let the product work for twenty seconds instead of rubbing, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Then comes the face moisturizer. The exfoliation does not replace cleansing, it comes once or twice a week.

FAQs

Do I Absolutely Need to Double Cleanse?

No, it depends on what you wear. If you only put on moisturizer, one cleanser is enough. With high-SPF sunscreen or long-lasting make-up, the first oily step makes a difference.

My Face Feels Tight After Cleansing. What’s Wrong?

Usually the product is stronger than your skin needs, or the water is too hot. Try a milder formula, lukewarm water and less massage time. If the tightness persists, discuss it with your pharmacist or dermatologist.

Do I Need a Separate Product for My Eyes?

If you lightly colour, a mild face and eye product will do. For waterproof mascara or eyeliner, a special biphasic make-up remover for eyes removes the colour without rubbing the eyelids.

Do Wipes Replace Regular Cleansing?

They work as an emergency solution. They often leave residues of active ingredients, so the ideal is to follow up with a water wash.
