Face Lotion: the liquid step that regulates the surface

The lotion is a water solution applied with a cotton pad or with the palms and is not rinsed off. Depending on the composition, it can act as a cleanser, removing light makeup and residues, or it can restore the pH of the surface after a cleansing with water. In the latter case, it prepares the skin so that the next products spread more evenly on a slightly moist surface.

The old image of the lotion was the solution with strong alcohol that stings and dries, with the rationale that this way the pores are cleaned. The size of the pores does not change with a lotion. Modern formulas work with thermal waters, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and mild acids, aiming at a fresh feeling and the improvement of texture appearance, not drying.

Choose according to what bothers you

If the face shines within a few hours, turn to a lotion with salicylic or glycolic acid at low concentration. If it reddens or stings at the slightest, ask for a formula without alcohol, with thermal water or amamelides. If the skin looks dehydrated and dull, lotions with hyaluronic acid give an immediate feeling of comfort. If you are mainly interested in the step after cleansing and not in the cleansing itself, check the options in toning lotion, while for one-step cleansing with micellar water there is the Eau Micellaire.

Details worth checking

• Position of alcohol in the ingredient list: the higher it is, the more drying the feeling.
• Indication for skin type, because lotions are among the most specialized categories.
• Thermal or mineral water as a base, in formulas with a soothing orientation.
• Low concentrations of AHA or BHA, when aiming for radiance and uniformity.
• Large packaging with a safety cap, if you use it daily with a cotton pad.
• Absence of colorants and strong fragrance for reactive skin types.

Popular choices of the pharmacy

The series Bioderma Sensibio dominates for sensitive skin, while Bioderma Sebium caters to the opposite case, oily skin. Avene Tolerance Control has a very short ingredient list for troublesome skin, while Froika Hyaluronic emphasizes hydration. The Vichy Purete Thermale Lotion Tonique is a classic toning option, the SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age moves in the realm of acids, the URIAGE Hyseac in the regulation of shine and the Caudalie Vinoclean in mild daily use.

How to incorporate it into your routine

After cleansing and before serum or cream. Two application methods: with a cotton pad, if you want a light mechanical removal of residues, or with the palms pressing on the face, if you want to avoid wasting product on the cotton. Do not wipe afterwards, let it absorb on its own and continue immediately with the next step. Lotions with acids start two or three times a week and not every night, especially if you already use retinoids. The most common mistake is vigorous rubbing with the cotton, which irritates without offering anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a lotion?

It is not a mandatory step. It makes sense if the water in your area is hard, if you want an extra pass after the cleanser, or if you seek specific action from the ingredients.

Can it replace my cleanser?

Cleansing lotions and micellar solutions can work on their own on makeup-free days. Toning lotions cannot, they are not designed to dissolve oiliness.

It stings a bit when I apply it. Is that normal?

A slight sting in a formula with acids can subside in a few seconds. If it persists or if redness appears, stop using it and ask your pharmacist.

Can I use it only on the T-zone?

Yes, and it is a very logical practice for combination skin. Acid or zinc lotions only on the forehead, nose and chin, moisturizing step everywhere else.
