Cleansing Gel

Cleansing Gel: The Wash-Off Texture That Leaves No Film

The gel is a transparent, fluid texture that activates with water. It is spread on wet face, foams a little or a lot depending on the formula, and completely rinses off. This is why it is chosen by those who feel that milks and oils leave something on their skin. After a gel, the skin is dry and ready for the next step, without the need to wipe it with a cotton pad.

There is an impression that the gel dries out. This is not true for all: it dries out gels based on strong, alkaline surfactants and fragrances. A gel with mild surfactants, glycerine and a pH close to the skin's natural pH can cleanse well and leave the face comfortable. The criterion is not the form, it is the composition.

Which gel for which skin

For skins with high oiliness and dilated pores, formulas with zinc, niacinamide or low salicylic acid work. For combination skins, where only the T-zone shines, a balanced formula without acids is enough. For sensitive skins, look for fragrance-free gels without sulfates, with panthenol or thermal water. For dry skins, a gel that turns into a milk or cream when it comes into contact with water is more tolerable than a gel that foams strongly. If you are specifically looking for acne-prone skin, check out the cleansers in the gel and foam for oiliness section.

What do I read on the label

• Mild surfactants like cocamidopropyl betaine or coco-glucoside instead of sodium lauryl sulfate.
• Indication of soap free or syndet, meaning it is not a classic alkaline soap.
• Glycerine high on the ingredient list, as a counterbalance to the feeling of dryness.
• Niacinamide or zinc for skins that shine quickly during the day.
• Salicylic or glycolic acid in low percentage, if you are targeting skin texture.
• Hyaluronic acid or ceramides in formulas that are characterized as hydrating.
• Pip or flip top instead of an open mouth, for more controlled dosing.

Frequently Requested Series

The CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is one of the most requested for normal to oily skin, with ceramides in the composition. The Vichy Purete Thermale Gel Frais keeps a cool feeling, while the Bioderma Sensibio Gel Moussant is for sensitive skin. The SkinCeuticals Simply Clean and Filorga Skin-Prep move in the direction of exfoliation, with mild acids. The Korres Olympus Tea and Apivita Purifying cover those who want herbal extracts, while the Froika Hyaluronic and URIAGE Eau Thermale are steady pharmacy suggestions for moisturizing or soothing cleansing.

Correct Use, No Overdoing It

A dose the size of a hazelnut is enough for the whole face. First wet the skin, lather the gel in your hands, spread it in circular motions for twenty seconds and rinse thoroughly, especially at the hairline and around the nostrils, where residues often remain. Cool water, not hot. The two most common mistakes are using too much and using a cleansing brush daily, which intensifies redness. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, the gel comes in as the second step, after an oily or milky texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the cleansing gel be used every day?

Yes, provided the formula is mild. Most use it in the evening, and in the morning only if their skin shines from overnight.

Does it have to foam to cleanse?

No. Foam is a matter of formula, not performance. There are gels with minimal foam that remove oil just as well.

Can I put it around the eyes too?

Better not, unless the packaging explicitly states that it is suitable for the area. There are special products for the eyelid and eyelash with a milder profile.

My skin pulls after the gel. Should I change it?

First try less amount and cooler water. If the feeling persists, turn to cream to foam formulas or cleansing milk, which are milder on the lipids of the barrier.
