Thermal Face Waters: What Exactly Does a Thermal Water Spray Do

Thermal or mineral water is drawn from a specific source and bottled with minimal processing to maintain its profile of minerals and trace elements. Silicon, calcium, magnesium, selenium and sulfate salts are present in different proportions in each source, and it is this proportion that gives each brand its own character. The products are almost always sold as pressurized sprays because this way the water reaches the skin without coming into contact with hands.

The big misconception is that thermal water hydrates. It is not a hydrating product. The water that remains on the surface evaporates and, as it evaporates, it can take some of the skin's moisture with it. What it really offers is a feeling of coolness and relief for irritated skin. To prevent it from working in reverse, blot the excess after a minute and follow up with a moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp.

When to Get Yours

After waxing or shaving, when the skin is burning. After sun exposure, in combination with the appropriate after sun. During the day, when the face feels heavy from the heat or air conditioning. On the plane, where the air is extremely dry. On top of makeup, as a light freshener. And as an intermediate step for ultra-sensitive skin, where any product with many ingredients is a risk. See also the section on sensitive skin, where thermal water is combined with the rest of the routine.

Things That Differentiate Products

• The source itself and the profile of the metallic elements, usually stated on the label.
• The size of the droplets: the finer the spray, the more even the coverage.
• The presence of a valve that sprays upside down, useful for the body and travel.
• The size of the packaging, from the small 50 ml for the bag to the 300 ml for home.
• The absence of preservatives and fragrance, which is the norm for pure thermal waters.
• The difference from floral waters and mists with extracts, which are another category of product.

The Sources You'll Find Here

The Avene Eau Thermale from the Sainte Odile source is the most widespread option, in three sizes. The La Roche-Posay Eau Thermale with selenium and the Vichy Eau Thermale with the fifteen metallic elements of the Vosges source are equally established. The URIAGE Eau Thermale stands out for its high salt content and is also available in double packaging. Beyond the classic thermal waters, the Apivita Greek Mountain Tea and the Caudalie Grape Water offer herbal face waters, while the Froika Hyaluronic Moist Water adds hyaluronic acid to its spray formula.

Correct Use in Three Steps

Hold the bottle about twenty centimeters from the face and spray with closed eyes. Let the water act for one minute. Blot gently with a tissue or with your fingers, without wiping completely, and continue with cream or serum while the skin is still slightly damp. You can use it as often as you want, as long as you don't let it dry out again and again. When traveling, the small size fits in the carry-on. Keep it away from heat sources and do not puncture the packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it replace my moisturizer?

No. Thermal water gives a feeling of coolness and relief, it does not retain moisture. The cream remains necessary and works better on damp skin.

Can I spray it over my makeup?

Yes, with a fine spray and from a distance. Blot lightly afterward so that no drops run and ruin the base.

Is it suitable for babies and children?

Pure thermal waters are widely used on infant and child skin. Check the label and ask your pediatrician or pharmacist if there is any active dermatological issue.

Does it help after waxing?

Many use it immediately afterward because it soothes the burning sensation. However, it does not replace the treatment of a persistent irritation, which requires an assessment by a health professional.
