Face Cleansing Milk: Cleanses Without Drying Out the Face

The milk, also known as cleansing milk, is an oil-in-water emulsion. Its oily phase dissolves greasy residues, i.e. sebum, makeup and sunscreen, while the aqueous phase allows it to spread easily and be wiped off or rinsed off. It is the only form of cleansing that can be used from start to finish without any water, which is why it is a classic choice for those who live in areas with very hard water or have skin that reacts to rinsing.

The argument against the milk is that it leaves a film. In practice, this happens when the amount is large or when the product is wiped off by hand. A milk that has been properly removed leaves the skin smooth and not greasy. Those who still want the feeling of a washcloth can simply rinse it off, which most formulas allow.

In Which Cases It Fits

For dry and dehydrated skin, where every foaming product leaves pulling. For mature skin, which produces less sebum and needs gentle removal without rubbing. For very sensitive skin, especially in winter, when cold and heating make the barrier more vulnerable. And in cases where the makeup is heavy, where the milk comes in as the first step and is followed by a foam cleanser. It is not the best option for very oily skin with a tendency to pimples, where lighter textures are usually preferred.

What We Look For In The Composition

• Plant oils such as almond, coconut or grapeseed, which give the dissolving ability.
• Ceramides and cholesterol, when the desired is the feeling of restoring the barrier.
• Glycerin and panthenol, to prevent the face from feeling dry after wiping.
• Indication of no rinse or rinse optional, depending on how you want to use it.
• Absence of essential oils and fragrance in formulas for irritated skin.
• Pump instead of screw cap, because the amount is controlled much more easily.

The Series That Are Requested

The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Nettoyant is a reference for low tolerance skin, in a large package. The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser covers normal to dry skin with ceramides. The Lierac The Cleansing Milk and the Nuxe Very Rose give a more sensual experience, while the Caudalie Vinoclean with almond and the Korres Olympus Tea move in the herbal direction. The Avene Lait Demaquillant and the URIAGE Tolederm are classic pharmacy suggestions, while the Embryolisse Lait-Creme has established itself as a multi-use product from the makeup scene.

How To Apply Correctly

Work it on a dry face. Apply a teaspoon with your fingers, massage for a minute to dissolve the makeup, and then remove with a wet cotton pad, a cotton pad or with lukewarm water. The massage on dry skin is the crucial point: if you wet the face first, the oily phase does not catch the makeup as well. Change sides of the cotton pad as often as necessary until it comes out clean. The milk does not need daily exfoliation on top, it suits routines that want less mechanical friction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to rinse off after the milk?

Not necessarily. If you like the feeling of a clean washcloth, rinse off. If your skin reacts to tap water, just wipe it with cotton.

Does it clog pores?

Modern formulas are designed to be completely removed. If you have skin prone to blackheads, choose a milk that rinses off and not a rich cleansing cream.

Does it remove sunscreen?

Yes, and effectively, because most filters are lipophilic. For sunscreens with very high water resistance, prefer a second step with rinsing.

Is it also for eye makeup removal?

Many milks claim to be suitable for face and eyes. Use them with gentle pressure, without rubbing, and do not stress the waterproof mascara.
