Essential Fatty Acids

The essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) are lipids that the body cannot synthesize on its own and must be obtained from the diet.

The role of essential fatty acids

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) contributes to the normal function of the heart, the maintenance of normal brain function, and the maintenance of normal vision, provided the daily intake is at least 250mg. Linoleic acid contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. These are the approved health claims under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. Essential fatty acids do not have an approved claim regarding the relaxation of arterial walls or the reduction of blood pressure.

Sources of fatty acids in the diet

Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), nuts, flaxseed, and vegetable oils (olive oil, sunflower oil) are sources of essential fatty acids.

When might you need a supplement

Individuals with limited fish consumption may be interested in omega-3 supplementation. Consult a dietitian or doctor for a personalized assessment.

Interaction warning

Omega-3 fatty acids in high doses may enhance the effect of anticoagulant medications. Individuals under such treatment should consult their doctor before taking high doses.

Supplement forms

Available in softgels (fish oil, krill oil) and liquid form.
