Callosities

Calluses: when the skin builds a defense where it is pressured

Callusing is not a defect of the skin, it is its response. Where the epidermis receives repeated pressure or friction, the cells of the keratinous layer multiply and stack, creating a dense, yellowish layer that acts as a shield. The problem starts when this layer becomes so thick that it loses its elasticity: then it no longer protects, it presses on the underlying tissues, makes walking uncomfortable and often cracks.

The difference from a callus is a matter of shape and depth. Callusing spreads over a wide surface, mainly on the heel, on the outer edge of the sole and under the base of the toes, and usually does not hurt when pressed. A callus is small, round and has a pinching core when pressed, and it is covered by the section calluses and corns. When the surface has already opened into grooves, the issue moves to the dry and cracked heels.

The forms you will encounter

Keratolytic creams

They work with urea in high concentration, lactic or salicylic acid. They break the bonds between dead cells, so that the thick layer softens and gradually peels off by itself.

Exfoliating peels and scrubs

They combine chemical and mechanical action with granules, and are suitable for mild, diffuse calluses as weekly maintenance.

Precision pen and inlays

They apply the active ingredient only to the hardened area, without spreading to the surrounding healthy skin.

Softening solutions and footbaths

They prepare the skin before mechanical grinding and are the step most people skip.

Protective inlays

They do not thin the skin, but reduce pressure on the spot so that the same layer does not build again.

What you read in the composition

• Urea in percentages from ten to forty percent, with high concentrations breaking down the keratinous layer more intensely
• Lactic acid and alpha hydroxy acids, for mild, gradual exfoliation
• Salicylic acid, liposoluble, with targeted action on thick spots
• Allantoin and panthenol, which soothe the surface after exfoliation
• Shea butter, ceramides and glycerin, to keep the skin supple afterwards
• Rosemary, tea tree and essential oils, which give a sense of freshness in footbaths

Popular options

The Gehwol covers the entire range, from professional softening solutions and scrub with pearls to keratolytic creams. The Dr. Scholl has intensive creams for hardened skin and interchangeable heads for electric grinding, while the Hansaplast Anti-Callus offers cream and peel in the same logic. The Frezyderm Frezyfeet with the Keractive series and the PODIA with its keratolytic cream are aimed at daily maintenance, the Vican Carnation for targeted application with a pen, and the Compeed along with the Pic Solution for pressure-reducing inlays.

A cycle that works

First soften with a warm footbath for ten minutes, then dry and gently grind with a pumice stone or sandpaper from the raspes, limes and sandpapers, always in one direction and without trying to remove everything at once. Apply the keratolytic cream in the evening, wear a cotton sock and let it act all night. Repeat the grinding every seven to ten days and keep the hydration daily, with products from the foot hydration. At the same time, change anything that creates pressure: sole, shoe size, seamless sock at the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it return after a few weeks?

Because the mechanical cause remains. As long as the same point receives the same pressure, the skin will rebuild the protective layer. The solution is maintenance along with a change in footwear or support.

Urea or salicylic acid?

Urea softens and moisturizes at the same time, so it suits extensive, dry calluses. Salicylic acid is more targeted for small, very thick spots. Your pharmacist will guide you accordingly based on the picture.

How often should I use an electric grinder?

Once a week is enough for most. Over-grinding makes the skin react by producing a new keratinized layer even faster.

Does the footbath before help or not?

It helps, as long as it is short and warm. Prolonged soaking swells the skin and makes it difficult to estimate how much material is being removed.

This text is informational and describes cosmetic formulations for exfoliation and hydration. It does not replace the advice of a health professional. Do not remove calluses with sharp tools and do not apply keratolytics without guidance if you have diabetes, neuropathy, circulation problems or a wound at the site. In these cases, as well as in persistent pain, consult a doctor, podiatrist or your pharmacist.
