Scrapers, limes and pumice stones: sanding, not removal

Hard skin on the sole is not a defect, it is the body's response to repeated pressure. Keratin thickens where the foot is loaded, on the heel, the forefoot and the side of the big toe. Tools in this category are not there to eliminate it, but to keep it at a thickness that does not crack or hurt.

The most serious misconception is about the razor. Removing calluses with a blade, razor or so-called foot razors is wrong for three reasons. Firstly, there is no way to see where the dead keratinized layer ends and the living skin begins, so the cut is made blindly. Secondly, every small cut is a gateway for infection, especially in a foot that sweats inside a closed shoe. Thirdly, the skin reacts to the abrupt removal by producing even more keratin, so the cycle speeds up. In people with diabetes, neuropathy or circulation problems, this practice is dangerous and should be completely avoided. Gradual sanding with a scraper or pumice stone gives the same result without these risks.

Which tool for which thickness?

Pumice stone

Natural or synthetic, it works on soft skin and is the mildest option. Ideal for maintenance two or three times a week.

Wooden or metal scraper

It has two sides, a rougher one for initial sanding and a finer one for finishing. The right choice for visible calluses on the heel.

Electric file

A rotating head that works on dry skin with constant pressure. Useful for those who find it difficult to bend, just don't stay in the same place.

Nail file

Paper, glass or metal, for shaping and length of the nail. The toenail is cut straight and filed only at the corners to prevent ingrown toenail, that is, the nail that burrows into the side. If the side hurts, turns red or swells, consultation with a doctor or podiatrist is required.

Scrapers with protective guide

They remove thin layers at a controlled depth. They require experience and are not recommended as a first choice at home.

The right order: first sanding, then hydration

The order is not a detail, it determines the result. First a short foot soak of five to ten minutes with salts to soften the layer. Then wiping and sanding, with small movements in one direction and without pressure, until the loose material is gone and not until you see pink skin. Then the hydration, which is better absorbed on a sanded surface. Here the concentration of urea matters. Around ten percent works mainly hydrating and gives softness for daily use. Around twenty-five percent acquires keratolytic character and helps to thin the thick layer of the heel. At forty percent the action is strongly keratolytic, intended for very thick calluses and for targeted, limited use, not for the whole sole every evening. Ask the pharmacist for the percentage that suits your case.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I file?

Once or twice a week for maintenance. Daily sanding irritates the skin and leads to faster re-formation of hard layer.

On wet or dry skin?

Pumice stone and most scrapers work best on soft skin after foot soak. Electric files are generally on dry skin as specified by the manufacturer.

Can I share my scraper?

No. Foot tools are personal, like nail files, because they carry microorganisms. See also the fungi section.

I have diabetes, can I file on my own?

Discuss it first with your doctor. In a diabetic foot, every wound, crack or color change needs immediate medical evaluation, and the care of hard skin is often done by a specialist.
