Swellings

Blister patches: a small fluid reservoir created by the body itself

A friction blister is created when the skin repeatedly rubs against the sock or shoe. The superficial layers of the epidermis detach from the deeper layers and the space left behind fills with clear fluid. This fluid is not something superfluous: it acts as a cushion and as a sterile environment in which the skin underneath regenerates. That is why the roof of the blister, as long as it remains intact, is the best patch there is.

The big misconception is that the blister needs to dry out in the air. In reality, the skin heals faster in a moist environment, and this is exactly what hydrocolloid patches do: they absorb the exudate, form a protective gel on the area and at the same time create a barrier against water and microorganisms. The second misconception is about the location: blisters are not only an issue with new shoes, they also appear in worn-out footwear when the foot sweats and the sock slips.

Which patch for which area

Heel and tendons

The most common area. You need large, elongated patches that follow the curve and do not peel off with the movement of the ankle.

Toes and interphalangeal spaces

Small, narrow patches or gel tubes that wrap around the toe without adding bulk.

Sole and midfoot

The load is greater, so thicker and more durable patches with strong bonding are preferred.

Prevention before it appears

Transparent protective stickers and adhesive strips are placed preventively in areas you know will bother you, while anti-pressure solutions are also available in anti-pressure and protective covers.

Features that make the difference

• Hydrocolloid matrix, which absorbs fluid and maintains a moist healing environment
• Thin, discreet edges that do not lift inside the sock
• Waterproof surface, so the patch can withstand a shower
• Shape adapted to the area, with a narrow waist for the heel or a tubular shape for the toes
• Sizes in mixed packaging, useful when you don’t know in advance where the shoe will hit
• Sterile packaging per piece, for safe transport in a bag or backpack

Popular options

The Compeed brand is the one most people ask for by name, with versions for toes, sole, high heels and the most reinforced Extreme and Turbo lines. The Hansaplast SOS offers transparent patches in small and large sizes, while the Dr. Scholl Expert Treatment covers mixed packaging and special shapes for toes. The Vican Carnation Blister Care and the PODIA Hydrocolloid provide more economical hydrocolloid solutions, the Gehwol Blister Plaster comes in sorted sizes and the Pic Solution in oval and narrow shapes.

Correct application and prevention

Wash your hands, clean the area with soap and water and dry thoroughly, because the hydrocolloid does not stick to wet or greasy skin. Warm the patch for a few seconds between your palms before placing it and press it from the center to the edges. Leave it in place until it falls off on its own, usually several days, and do not pull it off perpendicularly but parallel to the skin. For prevention, try on new shoes gradually, prefer socks that wick away moisture, keep your nails trimmed and make sure your feet stay dry with the help of foot powders. Frequently asked questions

Should I pierce the blister?

As a rule, no. The intact skin protects the area. If it is very large, painful or in a place that is constantly pressed, ask your pharmacist or doctor before doing anything on your own.

The patch turned white and swelled. Is it an infection?

Usually not. The white blister in the center is the gel that forms as it absorbs the fluid and shows that the patch is working. Change it when the white band approaches the edges.

How long does it stay on?

Until it loosens on its own, even three or four days. Early pulling removes the newly formed skin along with it.

When should I see a doctor?

If there is cloudy or yellowish content, spreading redness, heat, fever or severe pain. The same always applies if you have diabetes or circulation problems, where every wound on the foot needs assessment by a healthcare professional.
