Tired Feet

Tired feet: the weight that builds up from the morning

The feeling of heavy feet at the end of the day has nothing to do with how fit someone is. It has to do with gravity. When you stand or sit still for hours, the venous blood struggles to rise to the heart and fluids are retained in the tissues of the calf and ankle. Those who work standing, those who travel by plane and those who wear high heels know the result: tingling, a feeling of pressure, shoes that tighten in the afternoon.

Products in this category give a feeling of lightness and comfort, mainly through cooling ingredients and massage during application. They do not treat venous disease. Persistent swelling in the morning, swelling in one leg only, pain with redness and heat or visible dilated veins are findings that need evaluation by a doctor. Your pharmacist can guide you and discuss whether you need graduated compression stockings.

What to choose depending on when you feel it

At the end of the shift

Cooling gels with menthol are quickly absorbed and give immediate relief to the heel and calf.

After a lot of walking

Massage creams with a richer texture that combine a fresh feeling with hydration. They work well with a foot salt bath.

In the morning, before you go out

Light lotions that do not leave oiliness and allow you to put on a sock and shoe immediately.

When the foot is also dry

Formulas that cover both needs, or a combination with the products in the foot hydration section.

Ingredients you will encounter

• Menthol and camphor: give the feeling of a cool breeze that is most appreciated in summer.
• Extract of horse chestnut and red vine: classic plant ingredients in formulas for heavy legs.
• Arnica and black pepper: found in balms with a warming sensation for tired muscles.
• Essential oils of lavender and mint: combined with massage for a sense of stimulation.
• Mineral salts and Dead Sea mud: ingredients with a long tradition in foot care.
• Urea in low concentration: adds hydration without changing the cooling character.

Popular choices

The Gehwol Fusskraft line is the most recognizable, with the Fusskraft Green and Fusskraft Mint for freshness and the Gehwol Leg Balm for the calf. The Antistax Cooling Gel and the COSVAL Variton line are well-known options for the feeling of heaviness, as are the Vencil Daktylon and the CEDRAFLON. The Ahava with the Mineral and Dermud lines takes advantage of mineral ingredients, the Imperial Feet offers a warming balm and scrub for feet and calves, while the Intermed Diabetel is aimed at feet that need gentle daily care. For a relaxing mask, the Scholl PediMask is a simple solution, and the Natura Siberica covers herbal preferences.

Practical measures that make a difference

Application is done with movements from the fingers towards the calf, that is, in the direction of venous return, and not circularly in the same spot. Ten minutes with your feet higher than the level of the heart at the end of the day help more than any texture. If you work standing, change positions and take a few steps every half hour. If you sit for many hours, move your fingers and ankles up and down. Products with menthol are best kept in the refrigerator, the sensation of coolness is more intense. Avoid application on irritated skin and do not use them on blisters or open wounds.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my feet swell more in the summer?

Heat causes vasodilation, so the feeling of heaviness becomes more intense. Coolness, hydration with water and elevating the feet help.

Do compression stockings help?

They are widely used for the feeling of tired feet, but the degree of compression is not chosen by chance. Ask for guidance from a doctor or pharmacist.

How often do I apply the gel?

Follow the product instructions. In most cases, the daily evening application is common, and on days of intense standing it can be repeated.

Is it allowed in pregnancy?

The feeling of heavy feet is very common in pregnancy, but several ingredients, such as essential oils and camphor, require caution. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use.

I have diabetes and feel my feet heavy.

In diabetes, any wound, crack or change in color on the foot needs immediate medical evaluation. The same applies to numbness or reduced sensation, which should not be attributed simply to fatigue.
